On Now - Jorts
Give in to the jort already
We all know Y2K style is back but no look seemed more ubiquitous this late summer than women’s jorts. Borrowed from men in the 90’s/Y2K skater and rap scenes, this trend started popping back up in 2020 with women’s shorts inching longer than the usual cutoff. They were styled tighter and often called Bermuda shorts, but we were on our way! Then in 2021, women stopped fretting over the length and finally just went for it, officially declaring it a trend. Around this time Y2k style was taking off on TikTok and Billie Eilish’s star was rising, thanks to her Grammy win in 2020. Her oversized, baggy style (featuring a lot of wide-leg shorts!) probably helped pave the way for the jorts to return, though I have to acknowledge that butch lesbians have been rocking them since before Billie was even born.
In 2022 jorts were officially declared stylish by Vogue, their article even noting that Google trends had a spike in searches for the short. Every summer since we’ve had articles declaring that jorts are here and they’re staying, god dammit! And you know it’s serious when the Washington Post is getting in on it.
They’re often paired with a casual tank top or t-shirt and sneakers. Don’t miss that 90s anklet either!
With the longer hem, we might see the jort extend into the fall with oversized sweaters and boots, like the looks above. Having lasted a few summers now, it’s looking promising to extend into 2025, especially with wider jeans still running hot.
What Y2K style are we dragging back next?!
